Mr Chia Shih Sheung is the Chief Executive Officer of The Helping Hand Halfway House. In 2016, he received the NCADA Star Award for his outstanding contributions to the anti-drug cause. Read on for what he has to say about anti-drug efforts.
- How long have you been involved in the anti-drug cause?
Mr Chia Shih Sheung: I have been working in The Helping Hand as a paid staff for 8 years (since 2008). Prior to that I was a board member of The Helping Hand for the past 10 years (since 1999).
- What prompted you and kept you inspired to actively contribute to the anti-drug cause?
Mr Chia Shih Sheung: I accidentally became involved in drug rehabilitation work through The Helping Hand. I accidentally met a drug abuser and helped him get admitted to The Helping Hand, beginning my volunteer work there. I joined The Helping Hand as a paid staff in 2008 to help the anti-drug work in Singapore full time.
- What has been your greatest satisfaction throughout your years of contribution to the anti-drug cause?
Mr Chia Shih Sheung: My greatest satisfaction is seeing my friends and colleagues escape the evil crutches of drug addiction and be transformed into good and hardworking men, fully reintegrated back into society.
- Do you have any advice for individuals who are faced with the temptations of abusing drugs?
Mr Chia Shih Sheung: Only full and complete abstinence of ALL illegal drugs is the way for healthy, happy, fulfilling long life.
